Eyes on the Size

It’s clichéd, but size matters when it comes to poker playing cards.  It’s important to know that there are two standards of industry terminology.  You'll often hear the following two referenced - bridge size (narrow) and poker size (wide).

Bridge Size (2.25” x 3.5”)

The definition of irony. Most poker rooms across the globe use bridge size (narrow) poker playing cards for their cash games and tournaments.  Yes, you read that right.  It’s a common misconception that bridge size cards are only used for playing bridge or other card games.

Bridge size cards are .25” less wide than your typical poker size cards, but that makes a big difference for integration with automatic shufflers in poker rooms. The more narrow bridge size also lends itself to tighter pips, and can be better for card sweating in four-card games like PLO.  For many, bridge size poker playing cards are easier to shuffle and deal compared to poker size.

Poker Size (2.5” x 3.5”)

It’s a matter of personal preference, but poker size playing cards (wide) are typically the size chosen by home game poker players. It may simply be due to the direct name correlation. Poker size playing cards allow for a more spacious index and playing card design. They tend to also feel more substantial in your hands, and are easier to pitch across a poker table after a few rounds of poker play.

In addition, poker size playing cards tend to look better on the board from all seat positions and any table location. The poker playing cards that you see on your favorite live stream or television programs are usually poker size due to visual production and RFID card manufacturing benefits.
